Public Health Warnings: Cigarettes
Below I’ve pasted in a couple of scans of discarded cigarette packs, in order to show you what a cigarette health warning looks like if your Surgeon-General is NOT in bed with the tobacco industry. These packages are made in Indonesia, probably for the Singapore market (which is why they’re printed in English). I just picked up two different ones from the litter in an area outside the mall – an area marked, as you might have guessed, “Smoke-Free Zone.” I have seen other ones – including an exuberantly developed throat cancer (Eww!). Maybe they’re like baseball cards – you can collect the whole set.
Since I haven’t yet made it a habit to examine all the trash on the ground, I can’t tell you if American and Chinese cigarette packs have similar material on them – would the cancer pictures be pasted on the Marlboros at the point of import? If anyone expresses any interest in this I can devote a little effort to finding out. As always, you can see them in greater detail if you click on them. Be warned, though – these images are a little gruesome.
