Black Hornbill
There are some of these living near us, and there’s nothing quite like seeing this big bird’s silhouette during an early morning walk. They tend to sit quite still for a while, which keeps you from noticing them. When they do move, you can’t avoid seeing them; they’re so big that the branches bounce if they launch or walk around. And one flew past our window one day in a big black blur, but with white feather tips all around its wings and tail. Apparently they eat fruit and clack and call to each other, but not right around our apartment. Neighbors who live closer to them are not thrilled by the hornbills’ 4:30 a.m. rising habits.
