African Hornbill
Back to the Bird Park. I’m proud of this picture because it’s one of the few I managed to take that really focuses on the detail of the bird’s features. I like the scratches on the bill and the single eyelash going off to the left – yes, these birds have eyelashes.
African hornbills are the only ground-dwelling hornbills. I’ll see if I can find my full-length picture, and then you can see how well equipped they are for running around looking for things to eat on the ground. They can cover up to 11 kilometers a day – lately, that’s more than I can do. It’s also the only hornbill I have seen with wattles.
