Welcoming sculptures at Sixth Avenue
Here are some interesting, if not beautiful, sculptures at the entrance to a gated condo development on Sixth Avenue (across from the ever-to-be-praised bakery, Simply Bread).
First, the gatehouse itself, with rusty frogs admiring the palm and gecko-frieze above them.
Gate posts to either side as you enter flank you with a gecko-related bas-relief:
And above each gate post is a reclining lady with a flower in her hair, supporting an umbrella:
Once you’re inside, we have the classic see, hear, and speak no evil totem pole:
The gecko reliefs are pretty nice, but these other sculptures look a bit too primitive or badly executed – not to mention the question of their artistic relation to the geckoes or the style of the building. I can see that you might want people living in close quarters to see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil of each other, but why do you need clunky-looking umbrella-holders at the gates? And why would you want to remind people of the presence of geckoes, which will be abundant in their homes?
