Mooncake thumb drives!
It’s the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, and you know what that means –
Moon Cakes! Buy them for your friends and family! Spend $50 in a single receipt and get this free Mooncake Thumb Drive! Or at least that was the come-on at our local mall. We’re only 2 weeks into mooncake season, and alas, all the mooncake thumb drives are gone! Too bad, isn’t it? I think you can order a bunch more from Guangzhou (just google “Moon cake thumb drive” and see what you get), but not in time for the full moon this year.
Aren’t they cute? Mei, can you translate the cake characters for us? I can read “moon” and “good,” but not the other two.

Starting from the left-most character, going toward lower right, then back to the top character and finally to the right-most character, it reads: Flower, Good, Moon, Circle. What it means is something like many perfectly formed flowers blooming on a beautiful evening with full moon. This is a traditional phrase for an especially joyful occasion such as the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, which is always on the 15th day of the eighth month on Chinese Lunar Calendar. For what is typical of human nature, people sometimes also add: ????? which means a good harvest year and a long long life.
